Holy Week’s Unsung Heroes

The processions of Easter in Cartagena are of great size and importance and they draw many visitors to the city.

The cofriadas, or brotherhoods, that organise the processions have long histories and traditions and they carry heavy statues of Christ and the saints through the streets.  The silk robes and pointed hats are very colourful but the night-time processions are silent as this remains above all a deeply religious time.

Throughout the year, however, many people work quietly in the background, raising money to pay for the processions and to help ensure their success. The contribution of these unsung heroes is recognised in a statue that can be seen at the top of the Calle Mayor.  The three figures are a tribute to all the people without whom the processions could not take place.
