Try Some Desert Island Cruising

Troops and Legions Headquartered In Beautiful Building

The popular Carthaginians and Romans festival that sees the city enjoying itself in the last week of September each year has its headquarters in an attractive building that once belonged to a wealthy family.

The building is the Casa Moreno, which can be found on Calle Caridad, at the junction with Caballero, opposite Tommy’s Irish bar (open from early till about 3pm).

The Casa Moreno features elegant use of brickwork which is relatively unusual in Cartagena. It is one of the earlier of the homes built for wealthy businessmen, dating back to 1877.  Cartagena declared independence from the rest of Spain in 1873 and the resulting siege and bombardment by centralist forces which put an end to that little episode is said to have left less than 20 buildings standing.  So, if this house dates back to 1877 it may well have been started soon after the fine site made available by the results of artillery work.

The office of the Carthaginians and Romans festival is open in the mornings.
