Torpedo Treats

Cartagena’s navy museum is a great place for making interesting discoveries.  One recent English visitor was Pat who was delighted to find a Mark 44 torpedo standing in a corner.

This is a Mark One version and Pat worked on the improved Mark Two version when she was at Plessy, in Ilford, Essex.  The Mark 44 was an anti-submarine torpedo that was normally launched from a ship or aircraft.

On hitting the water it emitted sonar signals that allowed it to locate the target submarine and home in on it with its warhead.
