Try Some Desert Island Cruising

End Of The Road For Sub-Station

By Phillip Bruce

The grand monuments of cities are generally well protected these days but the everyday buildings that have served populations often fall to progress un-noticed and un-mourned.

The picture shows an electricity sub-station in the centre of Cartagena.  These buildings are often very attractive, with considerable attention paid to design elements.  Sometimes visitors mistake them for small chapels.

In fact, they were built throughout the 20th century to house electrical equipment that brought power to the city’s residents and businesses.  Now, more modern systems mean that they are no longer required and so they are disappearing.

This un-noticed little sub-station near the waterfront will soon fall to the wreckers’ hammers and a new residential and commercial building will rise in its place.
