Architechture – Strange But True

One of the most elegant sites in Cartagena is the long sweep of the 18th century walls at the waterfront.

The façade of one old building in the street that runs along the top of the walls is about to be enveloped by an ugly modern eyesore.  Cartagena has many beautiful buildings but it also has some real dogs that only an architect’s mother could love. Have a look at the two blocks directly opposite the beautifully restored and newly re-opened old Town Hall.  In fact, have a look at the building that houses the new Town Hall.

One passer-by looking at the artist’s impression of the place shortly to rise above the walls was convinced that it was a joke.  But it appears that it is a serious project.

At least it will give visitors a laugh when it is built.  There’s nothing wrong with an architectural joke.
