Steam Engine Isn’t Going Anywhere

By Phillip Bruce

An interesting steam engine is mounted on rails next to the entrance to Cartagena’s railway station.

An expert on historic engines found this very amusing.  He points out that there are no flanges on the wheels and if it tried to run along rails it would quickly fall off.

He thinks this may have been an engine used in farming or industry. It would have trundled along the road on its flat wheels and, when stationary, belts would have taken the power generated by the steam boiler to other machinery.

A brass plaque on the front of the engine has recently been stolen.  This bore the word “Paris,” which may give some clue as to the engine’s true history.
