Try Some Desert Island Cruising

Snails A Tasty Favourite

Local gourmets in and around Cartagena love tasty snails.  Not just any old snails but “trompetas” which are big juicy beasts.

The snails are collected in the countryside and are particularly abundant after rain.  The snails are often kept in traditional baskets with narrow openings made of tough esparto grass.

Snails are often added to paellas.  There is also a dish called arroz con caracoles, or rice with caracoles, and another called caracoles con arroz, or snails with rice.  The difference is in the amount of snails included.

The interior dome in the sacristy of Murcia’s huge cathedral features a snail shell spiral.
