Good News For A Sea Under Threat

The best news in ages for the Mar Menor has come with an announcement in July 2006 from the central government that the huge Puerto Mayor project on the La Manga Strip is cancelled and that the coastline must be restored to its original form.

Anyone with an ounce of sense is celebrating this respite from the concrete wave that threatens to totally engulf the strip.  This is a sand bar, probably laid down only a thousand years or so ago - yet in recent decades it has been covered with hotels and houses.  No doubt the owners are reading news of the impact of global warming on sea levels with interest.

Other development projects continue however.

Here are some recent air pictures of the La Manga strip and the Mar Menor taken in June.
