Seaside Elegance Fades Away At the end of the beachside promenade at Puerto de Mazarrón, west of Cartagena, an elegant house is quietly falling to pieces. This was once probably the summer home of a family wealthy enough to enjoy summer by the sea at the popular resort where many foreign residents now live. The sand would once probably have come right to the front of the house but now strollers pass by giving no more than a passing glance to the old building. The garden is overgrown and plants twine around the decorative iron railings. The letters F and G are entwined on the façade, perhaps the initials of the family. A corner of the exterior, see photograph, shows all sorts of classical ingredients. Can anyone name all of these? What type are the columns? How many proper architectural names can be given to the different elements? end
