Rail Tracks Left High And Dry

A station of the old railway that used to connect Murcia City with Caravaca, calling at several towns along the way, still survives at Molina de Segura.

Molina is just north of Murcia City and the station is beside a main road.  Today it seems to be used by the Red Cross as a vehicle base.  The station building exterior is still in good condition and there are pieces of track in place decades after the last train ran.

The Murcia terminus of this rail line can be seen in the city at the huge Plaza Circular roundabout. Other stations included Mula, Bullas and Cehegín and, of course, Caravaca.

The good news is that work is now well under way to open up the route of the old railway again as a regional walkway.  This is a confirmed project of the regional government and already much planning and preparatory work has been done.  Perhaps the old station at Molina will be renovated.

Soon hikers will be striding out along the way that was once covered by steam trains.
