Try Some Desert Island Cruising

Cartagena Quotes

Quotes over the centuries include:

Polybius of Megalopolis, 144BC

“Cartagena is located midway along the Spanish coast, in a gulf oriented to the Southwest.  At the mouth of the gulf there is an island that considerably narrows the access, on both sides…At the far end of the gulf there is a peninsula, on which the city stands, surrounded by sea on the East and South, cut off by the lake on the West and part of the North…The city has a concave form; on its southern side the access from the sea is flatter.  Some hills occupy the remaining land, two are quite mountainous and three not so high…The highest hill is on the East of the city, leaning into the sea; and on its top is a temple of Asclepius.”  (History X).

Saint Isidore, 7th Century

…Today, destroyed by the Goths, only its ruins remain…”( Etymologies, XV,1,67).

Isidore, a native of Cartagena, is said to be the Patron Saint of the Internet, thanks to his authorship of the Etymologies, which gathered together in 20 sections a vast amount of knowledge which informed generations of scholars.

Al-Idrisi, 11th Century

“…A large port that sheltered ships, attractive and full of resources.”

Cervantes, 1614

“…And so, by degrees, I came to the port

That was named by the men of Carthage.

Closed and sheltered to all winds.

Before whose bright and singular renown

Bow all ports that the sea has bathed,

The sun has kissed or man has sailed.”

(Journey to Parnassus).
