Premium Wine Doesn’t Break The Bank

By Phillip Bruce

Cartagena has several old bodegas, or wine shops, that are still going strong after many decades.  These usually feature old oak barrels and stainless steel tanks where the locals fill up with everyday drinking wine.

The region of Murcia, of which Cartagena is the rightful capital, produces fine red wines in the north.  Areas of note include Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas.  There is a good wine museum at the latter place.

Wine tours can be arranged so that visitors can sample the vintages that are attracting increasing international attention.  The vineyards of north Murcia are included in an EU scheme which has selected six lesser-known areas across Europe for promotion.

In this picture, a six-year-old reserve red wine, at bottom left, is on sale at 1.40 euros – less than one British pound – a litre.  Everyday good drinking wine is less expensive

If you are interested in a wine tour, or visiting some of Cartagena’s bodegas, then get in touch.
