Mystery Of A Name Ancient Cartagena was founded on a small peninsula that featured five hills. The Carthaginians ran walls between these hills and part of these walls can now be seen across the road from the city’s main tourism office. However, a little uphill and towards the sea from the tourism office there is a distinctive mount that was one of the ancient hills. Some 2 500 years ago when the city was known as Mastia it appears there may have been a temple to the god Ephaistos. Later, the Carthaginians worshipped their god Baal there. The modern name is Cerro Despeñapperos. On asking around what this name means, few local people are able to give an opinion. One person says that literally the name signifies something like “the hill from which unwanted dogs are thrown.” This appears rather surprising. Surely there weren’t that many unwanted dogs wandering around in times gone by? Can anyone shed any further light on this? Apparently, there is a dramatic cliff face on a road to Madrid which is also known by the name Despeñapperros. end
