Murcia’s Grand Old Railway Station

The regional capital of Murcia has a railway station with many fine old buildings and bits of railway kit to admire.

This was originally built as a station on the Madrid-Alicante-Zaragoza line and the letters MZA can be seen intertwined in logo of the line on decorative stones.  A turntable still appears to be in use at the station. There are water tanks. One of these is covered in graffiti but this is not evidence of criminal damage. Apparently, the crazy patterns are “art” and the person who did them is greatly rated in the fine art world.

The station is at the south of Murcia city, about a 20 minute walk away from the centre of town, which makes it pretty inconvenient but it’s worth a visit anyway.
