Try Some Desert Island Cruising

Mediterranean Marine Reserve

Off the Mediterranean side of the long La Manga strip there are is a marine reserve of the highest importance.

This is the area around the Hormigas islands which can be seen a few kilometres off shore from Cabo de Palos.  Fishing is restricted or banned in most of the waters and a huge variety of marine life flourishes there.

Naturally, the Hormigas are a prime destination for divers who enjoy exploring the protected waters.  As well as the wild life it is said that there are wrecks to be seen, including that of the passenger ship the Sirio, which sunk in one of Spain’s worst disasters at sea when it ran aground on a clear day in 1906 sending some 400 people to their deaths.

Another protected area includes the areas around Isla Grosa and El Farallón a little to the north of the Hormigas.  All the islands are important to birds as well as to marine life.

There are plenty of diving centres around the Mar Menor, which is the inland sea on the other side of the Mediterranean coast of the La Manga strip, and at Cabo de Palos.  There are more at Cartagena and at Puerto de Mazarrón.  All offer full facilities of the highest international standards.  A Mar Menor tourist information guide lists 17 centres.

For more information contact the Mar Menor tourism office, on 902 450 505, or info902@marmenor.net.  The website is at www.marmenor.net
