Try Some Desert Island Cruising

Market With A Classical Touch

By Phillip Bruce

Cartagena people like their food fresh and daily shopping in the city’s indoor markets is a must for good cooks.

The markets are very well organised, with sections for fish, vegetables and fruit, meats, and always a busy little café that serves up strong coffees and tasty snacks.

The Florentina market has a classical façade that gives an elegant entrance to the search for exactly the right piece of fish or sausage.  Columns rise above the steps and there is a frieze showing bucolic farmers, a fisherman and a shepherd and his sheep.

Even the supermarkets in Cartagena have to have a fresh fish section where the grannies shout their orders for the best fish on the slabs, cut and prepared in exactly the way they want it.  Get stuck behind one of them when you are after a few fresh sardines and you had better have half an hour to spare and earplugs.
