The Little Lanes By Phillip Bruce Cartagena was throughout most of its long history a fortified city. The grandest fortifications of all were the great walls and defences that were erected during the 18th century. Many parts of these walls can still be seen, particularly at the harbour front. Naturally, if there were defences then that implied threats – and so many people wanted to live inside the walls. This meant that the city was pretty crowded. Even the noble families had to forego long driveways and extensive gardens and they had to show their wealth and grandeur in the facades of their houses which fronted onto the public streets. Lots of little lanes also developed, where the poorer people would have lived and these little alleyways are still worth exploring today. Often a good café or a specialist craft shop can be discovered.
