Curious conversation about a hat Having just purchased a new Panama hat in Cartagena (see article elsewhere on this site) I was standing in the bright early summer sunshine on the pavement outside a beautiful London church. A woman approached me, in her forties probably, neatly but rather shabbily dressed. “Excuse me,” she said. “Could you tell me what type of hat you are wearing?” “It’s a Panama,” I replied. “Oh.” she said, looking doubtful. “Only my son has just written a novel and he said that a man was wearing a hat like yours. He called it a ‘bowla. ’ “B”, “O,” “W,” “L,” “A,” and the editor said that was wrong.” She peered at my hat. “So, it’s a Panama, is it?” “Yes.” “And what’s that other type of hat that Sherlock Holmes wears?” “That’s a deer-stalker.” “Oh.” Pause. “Was Sherlock Holmes a real person or just made up?” “He was fictional.” “I see.” The lady walked slowly away.
