The Smell Of The Greasepaint – The Roar Of The Crowd

By Phillip Bruce

All sorts of good things happen at Cartagena’s Teatro Circo.  The city has a long heritage of the theatre and the Teatro Circo has been at the heart of the action.

The building that today houses the theatre is an undistinguished pile near the end of the Calle Carmen with a block of flats squatting above it. Don’t let appearances deceive, however, there are great shows there throughout the year.

The city’s October jazz festival is based there and the huge world music festival of the summer sees lots of concerts.  You might find an opera, an orchestral concert or a comedy playing.  Spain loves circuses and that’s where the theatre name comes from.

Cartagena is the native city of a famous Spanish actor and company manager called Isidoro Maiquez (1768-1820) and you can see his statue in the Plaza San Francisco.  It seems he was a bit like England’s David Garrick.

The Teatro Circo has been entertaining audiences for generations.  It was a cinema for many years and in 1949 the stalls were packed for the film The Adventures of Buffalo Bill.
