Try Some Desert Island Cruising

A Good Day’s Shopping

Cartagena’s shopping has improved tremendously in recent years and shopping expeditions are made easy by the fact that everything is on the flat and, more or less, in a straight line.

Start by parking down at the waterfront, where there is a large underground car park.  Come up, face the city walls and turn to the left. Walk along until you see a big ornate building, which is the newly-restored original town hall.  Turn and walk past that building, which will be on your left, until you come to the Calle Mayor.

On your left again, in a beautiful old building, you will come to a big Zara shop.  Don’t forget to have a look upstairs.  Carry on, perhaps stopping for a coffee at one of the many pavement cafes, and you will come to Bershka, fashion, Oysho, lingerie, and Tintoretto, fashion.

When you will see traffic and you are in the Puerta de Murcia, at the heart of the city. Keep straight on.  There are several small fashion boutiques on the left and Benetton is on the right, along with opticians’ shops.  There’s a pleasant pavement café on the right where you can watch the world go by with a McDonalds opposite.   There is a big fashion shop next to the burger place.

Carry on to the left of the ugly Barclays Bank building.  Mango is on the left, with Masimo Dutti nearby.  Keep a look out for Marvimundo.

You will see a street, the Calle De San Florentina and there are several shops along there. But come return after you’ve had a wander down and back and carry on along the main route. You will see an old building of the Caja Murcia with a street running off on either side. Look for the great little jewellery shop. Bijou Brigitte, on the right corner.  You want the street on the right of the bank, which is the Calle Carmen. This has recently been pedestrianised, so you won’t have to worry about being run over as you go in and out of the shops.  Since the traffic disappeared this is rapidly developing into a top shopping destination.

On the right you will find Pepe Jeans London.  As you walk up, you will see, on the left, Il Café Di Roma, which is another good place to stop for a coffee and a snack.  One of Cartagena’s oldest bakeries, Confiteria Vicente Sanchez, is next door, so pop in for some sweet treats.  There is a Tabac opposite where you can stock up on cheap fags and buy lottery tickets.

On the left there is a posh ironmongers shop, the Ferreteria y Cerrajeria Sanchez Casado.  This stocks all sorts of useful things, including door and drawer handles, things for the bathroom and useful presents for the man in your life.

On the right you will find Punto Roma, fashion.  On the left Zara style is in evidence again at Zara Home, which stocks sheets, towels and lovely things for the home.  On the same side of the street there is a big selection of fashionable shoes at Rumbo.

On the right of the street Todo Sport is full of sports clothing and there is a good electrical goods shop, Diego Mendoza, close by.  On the left Bigfoot has a big choice of sports shoes. In fact, all the way along this route there are lots of shoe shops with all sorts of styles.  If you’re looking for smelly things, visit Druni Perfumerias, on the right, which is next to the Etam shoe shop. On the left is Prenatal, which is full of things for babies and toddlers.

At the end of the Calle Carmen you will find the Tribuini fashion shop.  Opposite is a useful supermarket of the Upper chain.

Now you are laden with bags all you have to do is walk all the way back to the waterfront car park.
