Funny Face

Some of the most intriguing speculations of history are created by things that no-one knows anything about.

This strange face can be seen carved into a block of stone at Cartagena’s Castillo de la Concepción.  It is an odd piece of work, of no great sophistication or skill.

Was it, perhaps, carved by a young apprentice, trying out his craft before going on to grander things?  Was the face that of some friend or of a distinguished citizen?  Is it a man or a woman?  Why is the mouth so small?  Is that a beard?

Invent any theory you like.  If you were Dan Brown perhaps you could relate the face to the Da Vinci code and make even more millions.

end.
