Favourite Foods – Figs

Cartagena people love figs, especially those fresh from the tree.  Fig trees dot the landscape, many of them very ancient and with gnarled trunks and twisted branches. But it seems figs are the toughest trees around and they produce delicious fruit season after season.

There are two fig crops, the first is the “breva” or black fig that comes early in the season and is followed by the more familiar green fig.  There are hundreds of recipes that use figs, one of the healthiest foods around.  True gourmets just stand in the shade of a tree, pick a fig and eat it.
