Environmental Volunteer Programme Region of Murcia Anyone interested in working to help the environment in the region of Murcia, Spain, will want to know about the Environmental Volunteer programme. The programme is known in Spanish as Voluntari@s Por Naturaleza, or, more formally, as Programa de Voluntariado Ambiental en Espacios Naturales de la Regiσn de Murcia. The initiative is supported by the regional government. Volunteers are always needed and organisers would be delighted to see more foreign residents involved in the wide range of activities that are now under way. Whether you are active and fit, or prefer more sedate activities, there is something for everyone as an Environmental Volunteer. One stumbling block is, of course, language, with many foreign residents being nervous about their lack of Spanish. But, dont be put off by this as there is no better way to learn more about the local community, and improve your Spanish, by working to protect the regions beautiful environment. You will also make many new friends. Who can participate? Anyone over 18, or over 16 with their parents or teachers permission, who wants to contribute in a practical way to environmental protection. What sorts of activities are arranged? In general work on physical projects takes place in protected environmental areas on Saturdays. Other activities, such as talks, gatherings and events are arranged at other times. Additional information All activities are voluntary and without payment. There are various subsidiary programmes, including General Training, Work Camps, the Know Your Natural Spaces project and even a project investigating spiders. The best way forward is to join in general activities and then apply to join one of the specialist activities. For the general projects in protected areas Volunteers make their own transport arrangements. However, where specialist programmes are involved, transport and food is generally provided. All participants are given an Environmental Volunteer Card and receive certificates acknowledging their contributions. For more information, English speakers should telephone Juan Diego on 625 148 489 or email him on voluntaryenp@telefoninca.net or vitaxxi@als2001.net. The Spanish language contact number is 647 323 943. The website to check is www.carm.es/mediambiente. Also, watch for information in the Round Town News newspaper and on its website www.roundtownnews.com. We are trying to get more English onto this website as translations become available.
