Try Some Desert Island Cruising

Cut a Caper

A very high proportion of the plants that grow wild in and around Cartagena can be eaten or have some medicinal benefits, it seems.  Presumably, most of the nasty poisonous things were eliminated over the area’s long history.

One plant that grows spider-like along the ground is the caper – that essential accompaniment to salmon dishes.

The capers that are pickled are actually the flower buds that are picked before they are opened.

In Cartagena it is not just the buds that are eaten as young branches, complete with little thorns, are pickled and make a very tasty snack.  You can by them at the pickle stalls in local markets.  Capers are alcaparra in Spanish.
