Try Some Desert Island Cruising

A Cordial Dish

A favourite treat for Cartagena people, particularly around Christmas time, are pastries called cordiales.

English speakers know cordials as fruit drinks or liquid tonics, and that meaning of the word does also apply in Spanish.

However, the cordiales that Cartagena people enjoy so much are little dry cakes, with almonds as a key ingredient.  This is not surprising given the hundreds of thousands of almond trees that grow in the countryside all around the city.

The cordiales taste rather dry and are expensive – around 25 euros a kilo. The dryness is probably explained by the lack of butter and dairy products in the local cuisine. But if you want a really traditional local treat these are the things to look out for and, no doubt, they are much healthier than cream-laden confections.
