City Wall Uncovered

One of the most impressive sights in Cartagena is the section of the city walls by the waterfront but another section can now be seen.

Cartagena was first fortified by the Carthaginians some 2 200 years ago but the big walls that are on show today were built during the 18th century when the importance of the port grew substantially.

During the 20th century most of the walls disappeared as the city grew and as town planners opened up new roads and access points. However, the waterfront section that curls inland around the old navy hospital now converted into university facilities, escaped destruction.

At the back of the old city, near to the old artillery barracks, now home of the Military Museum, the foundations of the 18th century walls can now be seen.  At least, that is presumably what they are as there is no sign or plaque giving any information.

The section can be found across the road from the Military Museum, in the pedestrianised area below Muralla de Tierra – which means landward walls in Spanish.

Designers have done a very good job in extending the pattern of the walls into the tiles that make up part of the pedestrian plaza. The outline of the old wall has been picked out in a different colour which makes it easy to follow its line.
