Cartagena’s Railway Station Is A Jewel

The Cartagena railway station is well worth a visit.  Even if you are not a railway enthusiast, it is well worth seeing the ornate building.

The first regular train service between Cartagena and Murcia started in 1865 but the railway station was built later than that.  There are colourful tiles on the façade, impressive stonework and fantastic ornamental ironwork at the main entrance.

Inside, the old ticket and information offices have their facades preserved and there is also a replica of a Roman inscription found nearby to be seen on the wall.

The station is still very much in use, with regular services to Murcia and towns along the way, and with a train that runs each day right along the Mediterranean to Barcelona and onwards to Montpelier, in France.

The letters “MZA” can be seen in the keystones of the windows. These are the initials of the old Madrid-Zaragoza-Alicante railway that used to run the line. Now things are operated by RENFE.

One railway enthusiast has suggested that originally there was a roof covering the platform area but another does not support this view.
