Great Boat Breaker’s Yard

On the far right hand side of the harbour at Cartagena, on the way to the Navidad breakwater and lighthouse, there is a great little boat breaker’s yard.

The yard is in front of two old submarine pens that used to allow subs to float right into the mountainside for repairs.  These dried out years ago and now seem to be used as storage warehouses.

In front, however, is the breaker’s yard where old warships are dragged out of the water and cut up.  All sorts of goodies can be bought, from fire-fighting breathing helmets to brass fittings for minesweeping controls.  Can be bought, that is, if you don’t take your wife with you.
