Avoid Beach Misery Spanish holidaymakers can have very definite views about the proper dates when summer holidays should be taken. The core season lasts about a month, from the middle of July to the middle of August. Probably the most expensive time to rent a holiday apartment is during the first two weeks of August. After the Feast of the Assumption, on August 15, things start to wind down again for another year. By the last week of August the beaches, pavements and restaurants, are much less crowded as many of the happy Spanish holidaymakers have headed back to their inland homes. Families, of course, need to get ready for the start of the new school year. Popular beaches around Cartagena, such as those along the La Manga strip, the towns and villages of the mainland side of the Mar Menor inland sea and the central beaches of Puerto De Mazarrón are magnets for worshippers of sun and sea of all ages. Anyone avoiding the mid-July to mid-August crush period will find popular beaches much less crowded and holiday rentals considerably cheaper. Even in the peak period, however, there are plenty of beaches away from the most popular spots that are almost empty. end
