Aviation Pictures From The past

The Los Alcázares and San Javier coastline of the Mar Menor inland sea is the cradle of Spanish aviation.

From the start of the 20th century onwards sea planes and other early aircraft were laying the foundations for the Spanish air force.  The air base at San Javier is still the prime training facility for new pilots.  Civilian flights also use the runway and more than a million visitors arrive each year.

At the town hall of Los Alcázares interesting photographs of early aviation are displayed on the walls.

In these pictures, a sea plane can be seen in the forefront of a photograph taken in 1927, and there is another aerial view from 1937.  Aircraft pictures include an Avro 504K seen in the air and Curtiss JN-Z pictured on the ground.

Separately, we include a picture of an old aviation tool found in the area, alongside a cigar for size reference.
