Art As A Prescription For Health

By Phillip Bruce

The chemists of Cartagena have artistic leanings.  Many of their shops feature decorations that are worth a second look.

The chemists like references to classical sources and the staff of the god of medicine commonly features as an element.  Natural themes, such as healing plants are shown.  One frieze gives the chemical formula C2COOH, which must be the formula for some wonder drug (does anyone know what?).

In British supermarkets you can find a wide range of non-prescription medicines.  You won’t find that in Cartagena for in Spain the chemists retain a vice-like medieval guild grip on their trade.  Even if you only want a packet of aspirins you have to go to the chemist.

Still, at least you will probably have some art to admire.

end.
